Constructing a New Concourse

Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport's new International Terminal, Concourse F, included designing new office spaces and service areas for five international airlines that will be the terminal’s new tenants. It was important to the owner that the new spaces provide a safe, efficient and comfortable working environment for tenants and travelers. This included assuring the design accommodated the unique expectations and needs of each airline. Accomplishing these goals on schedule and within budget was also an important target for success.

The project began as the exterior construction of Concourse F was nearing completion. Fruitful collaboration among the design team, the owner and the team responsible for the design of the exterior shell was crucial. Both design teams coordinated construction drawings with actual as-built conditions, while the M/E/P teams coordinated the extension of the basic building services to the new spaces created during the interior design project.

An interesting challenge met by the Interior Design team was satisfying the various standards and expectations of each airline regarding the quality and selection of furnishings and finishes while also adhering to the finish and material selection standards of the owner. Multiple finish palettes were created to accommodate the particular corporate branding elements that are unique to each airline. The resulting interior design pleases the individual requirements of each airline while providing a welcoming, comfortable, high caliber space for employees.
