Utilizing Sustainable Building Practices

Gwinnett Technical College is one of the most rapidly expanding campuses in the Atlanta metropolitan area, and the Life Sciences are one of the fastest growing programs in the college. The college educates professionals to work in healthcare settings known to provide world-class services and frequently collaborates with corporate, governmental and institutional partners. The owner’s goal was to create a building that utilized sustainable building practices and materials while communicating a commitment to excellence and inspiration to both the student body as well as guests and teaching partners.

Looking Towards the Future

The building plan allows for future growth, a requirement on this ever-expanding campus and the design solutions meet both current and projected future needs of the client. While the student body is youthful and energetic, the visiting guests and teaching partners are more experienced professionals. The flooring patterns used in the active corridor spaces are dynamic and mimic the heightened energy in these spaces while appealing to the youthful student body. In contrast, the colors used in the collaborating spaces are hues of blues and earth tones, which speak to the quieter nature of interactions in those spaces.

Interactive Spaces

There are several interactive spaces for students, faculty and guests to gather including a café bar with seating, a more active stand-up café and several lounge spaces. These spaces again speak to the various needs of the end users by promoting spaces that accommodate both relaxed interaction as well as quicker laptop touchdowns as well.

The Life Sciences Building features a number of relaxing interactive spaces all designed to speak to the varying needs of the building’s end users. The Architect of Record is Cooper Cary.
