The design of the new Student Center is based on a single-story structure which will feature a large flexible space for a variety of student-centered activities all located near the University of South Carolina.
The structure is pulled forward on the site, similar to neighboring buildings in the community, with hidden parking located at the rear of the property. A significant change in grade is negotiated via a series of ramps and terraced patios, all complying with ADA requirements.
The character of the building is a landscape hugging structure with wide overhangs and a hipped roof. Brick veneer and siding complete the palette of “warm” materials.
Functions in the large space can spill out into pre-function areas that flank the center of the room. Interior garage doors open to connect these spaces through large openings which are incorporated to add to the flexibility of the space. Activities can also continue outdoors onto the series of landscaped terraces.
