Newton Medical Center needed a comforting environment that would be able to meet the demand of the obstetrics population being served as well as accommodate the needs of the patient and family members.
The hospital challenged the design and construction teams to come up with a phased solution that minimized downtime and remained within a constricted budget. The multi-phase design solved the department’s challenges by bringing the patient spaces back into the department, clearly delineating patient and staff access, giving space for family use, adding program space, creating a more effective nurses’ station and updating the patient rooms and toilets. HVAC equipment, ductwork and utility connections were reconfigured or replaced to serve the Postpartum/Triage areas and brought up to code. The department entrance was defined by creating a waiting and greeting area bringing natural light into the space to create a warm environment that celebrates the joys of new life.
