When Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport decided to renovate the circa 1970’s Concourse A and B, the goal was to create an updated look utilizing highly durable materials throughout the corridors and restrooms. Within the corridors, the carpet, walls and finishes were replaced with new slate, porcelain and quartz tile. The air has been greatly improved in the existing smoke lounges by the addition of a new HVAC system. To increase natural light, new exterior windows were added. Diagonal patterns were incorporated in the floor and ceiling to provide a dynamic feeling to the space and break the rigidity of the column grids. In the Delta waiting areas, all existing restrooms and finishes were updated. All three restrooms received new low flow plumbing fixtures and valves and HVAC upgrades to the exhaust systems. Two of the restrooms received upgraded floor and wall tile. The design work included a phasing plan for the upgrades to assure that the restrooms could remain operational for the duration of the construction process.
