The project for the new International Terminal (Concourse F) at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport included designing new office spaces and service areas for the five international airlines that will be the terminal’s new tenants. It was important to the owner that these new spaces provide a safe, efficient and comfortable working environment for tenants and travelers. This included ensuring that the design accommodated the unique expectations and needs of each airline. Accomplishing these goals on schedule and within budget was also an important target for success.
Because this project began as the exterior construction of Concourse F was nearing completion, fruitful collaboration between the RWH design team, the owner and the design team responsible the exterior shell was crucial. Both design teams needed to coordinate construction drawings with actual as-built conditions. Both teams of mechanical, electrical and plumbing engineers needed to coordinate extension of the basic building services that were part of the exterior shell design to the new spaces created during the interior design project.
An interesting challenge met by the interior design team was satisfying the differing standards and expectations of each airline regarding the quality and selection of furnishings and finishes, while adhering to the finish and material selection standards of the owner. Multiple finish palettes were created to accommodate the particular corporate branding elements that are unique to each airline. The resulting interior design pleases the individual requirements of each tenant airline while providing a welcoming, comfortable, high caliber space for employees.
