Congregation Beth Jacob Social Hall and Kollel

As the latest addition to the Congregation Beth Jacob campus, the Atlanta Scholars Kollel is a building designed to be a beacon for the Jewish Community as well as to complete the Beth Jacob campus. The challenge presented to the design team for the Kollel addition was to produce a building that would unify and complement the existing campus. Additionally, as the Atlanta Scholars Kollel is an institution independent of the Congregation, the new facility needed to assert its own identity while not diminishing the presence of the sanctuary. Atlanta’s oldest orthodox synagogue, Congregation Beth Jacob constructed their first building on this site in 1960.  Kitchens and classrooms were added in 1977 and a new synagogue entry was added in 1990.  Sited on a busy residential road, the synagogue featured a complex of strong rounded forms against lower rectangular background building.  The site slopes away from the street, allowing the two-story buildings to the rear to appear similar in scale to the surrounding one-story residences.
